== Design & Construction ==

The ships were originally designed in secret in 2347. After three years of refining the design the Terran government gave authorization to produce 96 Arks in secret locations across the planet. Construction of the Arks took place in massive hangars that were closed to visitors and were not known except those who knew of the program. The few human crews that were involved lived within the building and did not leave the property.

The Exodus Arks were built with a single purpose in mind; to push human colonization well beyond the known limits and provide a cluster of human colonies that would push human expansion and exploration of the galaxy core-ward. The target destination of the ships was the Hyades Star Cluster, roughly centered around 150 light years from Earth, more than three times further away than any of the human colonies to date.

The second item of interest is a series of metal ribs that line the cargo hold. The ribs are carried into orbit and are assembled the end-terminus of newly developed transportation system. This was a last minute addition to the cargo manifest and some food and medical supplies had to be removed to make room. This technology works in principle like a large-scale mag-lev train or a rail gun; objects passing through the ring are accelerated to a very high velocity. Without additional rings to catch them the ships utilizing these ring tunnels for travel would go on forever (or until they ran into something). These rings in particular are designed to slow and stop incoming ship traffic safely. The idea was that by the time that the colonists arrived they would have developed faster, better technology and would have the ring tunnel most of the way completed. Once the colonists arrived and set up the rings, Earth would dispatch supply ships to restock them.

Maximum sustainable velocity: 149,896,229.00 m/s.

In terms of overall generic architecture, the Ark Ships are roughly cigar or submarine shaped. The ship is divided into four parts of equal length. The middle two sections are where the passengers sleep and are cylinder shaped. The last section is capped with a square engine section, and the first section has a protruding ventral fin which adds to the complexity of calculating space and size.

== Operators ==
Due to the immense expenditure of time and resources required to build these ships they were operated in very limited capacity. Only the [[Terran Alliance]] built and operated the Exodus Arks. Although funding was a joint effort between all of the worlds in the alliance the ships were manufactured on Earth.
== Noteable Actions ==
The ships of this class were purpose built for a single objective: the colonization of the [[Hyades Cluster]]. All 96 Exodus Ark Ships participated in the Exodus Event, the name given to the colonization effort.

The Exodus Ark Ships (EAS) represent the cutting edge of human technology and ingenuity. The ships themselves are marvels of technological engineering. They are the largest surface-landing capable ship the humans have ever produced. Each ship took between 20 and 21 years to complete (on average). In addition to carrying a crew of 2,000 the ships themselves were equipped to carry 100,000 passengers and colony supplies.

Design & Construction

Each of the 96 ships had a specific star in mind for colonization. The ships were equipped with the best engines that humanity had to offer, but those engines were still only capable of one-half light-speed. As such, the journey to Hyades would take 300 years. To help compensate for potential mechanical failure the ships were designed with triple-redundant systems.

Another feature unique to the Ark Ships was the passenger loadout. Although the ships were capable of carrying 100,000 passengers the Terran Government decided to restrict the number of people who could go. Since the Hyades Cluster was so far away and that area of space was largely uncharted, it was decided to send 50,000 military personnel aboard each ship to help ensure the survivability of the colony. The remaining 50,000 seats would filled by civilians. Of those, 25,000 of them would young married couples without children, and the remain seats would be filled by singles; 12,500 men and 12,500 women. A series of aptitude tests and a health physical screening ensured that only those who would be capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of life on an alien world would go.

The cargo of the Ark ships is also unique. In addition to the food and medical supplies required by the colonists, and the shelters and buildings, there are also two other items of interest. The first item is a series of stackable blocks. Once unloaded, these blocks unfold to reveal modular military vehicles; both land and air vehicles. Each Ark carries the following military vehicles:

  • 675 Light Aerial Vehicles
  • 150 Light Ground Vehicles
  • 50 Light Amphibious Vehicles
  • 25 Medium Air Transports
  • 5 Medium Ground Vehicles
  • 5 Heavy Air Transports.

The ship carries 100,000 passengers. There are two sections devoted to passengers, so each section carries 50,000 passengers. The passengers are divided across 5 decks of space resulting in 10,000 passengers per deck, per section. The Cryotubes are 10' tall and have a diameter of 4' each. Assuming that they are arranged 100 tubes per row, and accounting for sufficient space for walkways, etc, The width of the ship should be not less than 600' (182m) (0.1 miles). Since there are 10,000 passengers per deck and there 100 cryo tubes in each row, there would also need to be 100 rows of tubes. And, since each tube is 4' in diameter each section would be 400' long. However, this would not account for ways to allow people to get in and out of the tubes, nor for the hatch to open. Assuming that two rows of tubes were arranged back to back and a walkway was added between then it would easily increase the length of each section by half again as much. Being conservative and ensuring enough space I will round up to estimate each section at 800' long. Assuming that each of the four sections of the ship is the same length, this gives the total length.

|---800'---|---800'---|---800'---|---800'---| (3200' total length) (975m) (0.6 miles)

The mathematical formula for calculating volume of a cylinder is V=Pi(r^2)(h). In this case the diameter is 600', so the radius is 300'. And the height is 800'. V= Pi(300^2)(800)

The above formula gives each cylindrical section a volume of 226,194,671.06 cubic feet. Assuming that 40 cubic feet is equivalent to 1 ton, that gives each section a capacity of 5,654,866.78 tons. Assuming that despite the deformities of the front and rear sections they have roughly equivalent size and volume, then the overall ship would have a total volume of 22,619,467.11 tons. Further assuming that the ship is constructed out of something roughly equivalent to steel, then the ship would have a density of 7,850 g/cm^3, or 7.85 kg/cm^3.

The cryodecks are 50' tall (combined height), 600' wide and 800' long which gives them a volume of 24,000,000 ft^3. When you subtract this from the overall volume of the cylinder you get a remaining volume of 202,194,671.06 ft^3. Considering that this area is divided equally above and below the cryodecks that gives a total area of 101,097,335.53 ft^3 for cargo, and and equal space for life support. Further assuming that 1 ton is the equivalent of 40 ft^3, then that gives each section a cargo capacity of 2,527,433.39 tons, and since cargo is only carried in the middle two sections then the ship has a total cargo capacity of 5,054,866.78 tons.

Assuming that each person requires a 3,600 calorie/day diet, then it would take 2,175 lbs of food to feed each person for a year. Assuming also that the ship carried this much food for each of its 102,000 passengers and crew, then it would need to carry 221,850,000 lbs of food, or 110,925 tons.

Operators

Due to the immense expenditure of time and resources required to build these ships they were operated in very limited capacity. Only the Terran Alliance built and operated the Exodus Arks. Although funding was a joint effort between all of the worlds in the alliance the ships were manufactured on Earth.

Noteable Actions

The ships of this class were purpose built for a single objective: the colonization of the Hyades Cluster. All 96 Exodus Ark Ships participated in the Exodus Event, the name given to the colonization effort.
