Overview

Avaenon is the primary colony world of the Coronis star system. It is a "Super-Earth" roughly 2.5 as massive as Earth. Due to the giant nature of the parent star, Avaenon occupies distant orbit. Avaenon is a temperate world with lush, rolling hills and wooded forests occupying much of the terrain of the world. The world is about 46% water and 54% land. The planet is 30% larger than Earth in radius. It has a 37 hour day and a 3,837 day year.

The peoples who settled onto Avaenon developed a clan-based tribal society. The basis of their culture can trace it's roots predominantly to Celtic and Norse cultures on Earth. Names, mythos and other cultural traits are integrated into the names of certain places of this world.

Surface Geology & Features

Avaenon is roughly half land and half water. There are two large glacial ice caps on the north and south poles. The land masses are formed into several large continents that have a number of smaller islands along the coastlines.

Many of the larger continents feature enormous mountain ranges that span hundreds of kilometers. There is a particularly high mountain range in the planet's southern hemisphere, on the main continent.

The surface also shows signs of several major asteroid impacts several millennia ago. Planetary Scientists aboard the EAS-Destiny believe that these impact craters are most likely asteroids that were perturbed out of their orbits from either the Avaentort Belt or the Serdi-Sundi Belt. Further analysis is required to determine the exact nature of the impacts and to do a proper risk-analysis assessment of future impacts.

Climate & Seasons

This planet experiences seasonal changes, similar to Earth, however, the season last much longer. Each season lasts roughly 5.5 Terran Standard Years.

Much like Earth, this planet has a hotter equator and colder poles. There a desert regions near the equator and tundra and ice near the poles. The tropics on this planet are lush temperate zones where you would find the average temperature.

This planet experiences rainfall, earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes all similar to Earth.

Orbit, Rotation, & Timekeeping

It takes Avaenon 21 Years and 235 Days to complete one orbit around Coronis. This year is far longer than the Terran Standard Year. Using the Avaenonian Year as a baseline for communicating with other planets would be impractical. One season on Avaenon lasts several standard Terran years. For day-to-day functions, the Avaenonians have adopted the Hyadian Calendar to keep track of years. The calendar was slow to catch on, but eventually it was unanimously adopted.

The 37 Hour Day is also far longer than the Terran day as well. It is more impractical to try to conform to Terran Days for day-to-day operations. Partly based on the rotation of the military duty shifts in the major cities, the culture of this world has adapted to breaking their day apart into three equal segments of 12 Hours and 20 minutes. They refer to these segments as Thirds and it is a convenient way to manage things.

Habitability

This planet is ideal for human habitation. The atmosphere and gravity of this world are a close match to Earth. The temperature range and atmospheric properties are also very similar to Earth. Humans can survive on this world without specialized equipment with ease.

The biggest issues with long term habitability of this planet will be psychological for the first generations of colonists. The planet is a vastly different color than colonists from Earth are used to seeing, and there are more moons in the sky. Second-Generation colonists will not be bothered by these traits as that will be all they have ever known. However, the planet's longer day and longer seasons will invariably create a cultural shift to accommodate these traits. It will take several generations before the colonists of this world have fully adapted psychologically.

Moons

Avaenon features three moons; Jubi, Osel, and Tellen. All three of these moons are large enough to have at least a thin, breathable atmosphere. Of the three moons, Jubi is the closest, and Tellen is the furthest.

In Avaenon superstition it is considered lucky when all three moons are in alignment and are visible in the sky. It is considered extremely unlucky if all three moons are in alignment on the far side and are not visible. It is generally considered dark or ominous if neither no moons are visible at night.

Flora & Fauna

This planet has a wildly diverse ecosystem. The flora on the world are both simple plants and highly evolved plants. The foliage of the plants on this world is dark; dark reds, blacks, and purple permeate the landscape. Purple is the predominant color. On occasion you can see dark green plants that are hybrid remnants of Earth-crops that the colonists brought with them. During autumn and winter and leaves turn crimson, brown and black before falling off. Some of the native plants are edible, but some are highly poisonous. Extreme caution is suggested.

The planet's fauna are as ecologically diverse on Earth. There are sea, air, and land creatures. The planet has reptiles and mammals both. There are also creatures ranging in size from animals larger than blue whales on Earth to insects smaller than a gnat. Some of the animals are dangerous and will attack humans. Rara Wolves are the planet's apex predator and extreme caution is suggested when entering areas inhabited by them.

Civilization & Culture

The planet was first colonized in 0 SHA (2631 TSC) by the EAS-Destiny. Upon making planetfall colonization efforts were taken over by Supreme Field Marshall Helen Everett. As per Colonization Protocol, Captain Nathalie Jonsson landed the ship on the equator. The point that the ship landed became the Prime Meridian for this world. SFM Everett continued to follow protocol and sent the orbital shuttles up to construct the orbital gate. She also used the Ark's compliment of Albatross' to equally distribute the colonists and supplies to four other points roughly equidistant around the world; Northpoint City, Southpoint City, Eastpoint City, and Westpoint City. The colonists continued to dismantle the Destiny and use the metal to construct permanent buildings. Her computers were turned into a research facility and her engines were converted into a power core, all in accordance with the colonization protocols.

When the supplies did not show up from Earth as expected the colonists began to panic and tensions mounted. The military forces on the world kept control of the situation as best they could. Once it was evident that Earth was not sending supplies SFM Everett ordered the military to sieze control of all assets and supplies "so that they can be properly rationed". She also ordered the immediate discontinuation of all vehicular movement and plunged the planet's population into a self-preservation mode. Being unable to cope with the situation many of the colonists rioted and several of them were killed in the colony cities as the military forces attempted to get them under control. Damarien Tierney convinced SFM Everett to allow the colonists who wished to leave the major cities to venture out on their own taking only minimal supplies with them. Tierney pointed out that the area immediately surrounding the city could not support the sudden appearance of 20,000 people once the rations from the Destiny ran out. Everett saw the wisdom in this and relented ordering all of the other cities to do the same.

Many of the colonists fled the established military-controlled cities and took to the wilderness in great caravans. A few dozen people would break off here or there and establish settlements in places that they thought seemed like a good location. And so, within a few Terran years of landing the human population of this world had spread out to inhabit the surface in numerous small, scattered settlements. SFM Everett ordered the computers to only be used on solar power and only for 10 hours per day for analysis. The remaining 20 hours per day he had scribes recording the entire sum of human knowledge into tomes starting with the most advanced knowledge and working their way down. If the computers ever failed completely there would be a physical hard-copy record. Later, she set scribes to transcribing these books into multiple copies and sending them to each of the major cities with orders that the military personnel guard them. Within a few years of landing, the power core suffered a critical meltdown and the computers went dark. So began the Dark Age of Avaenon.

As the years dragged on the settlements suffered. Some could not get crops to grow, some were attacked by predators, etc. The colonists and their descendants had a curious mixture of primitive stone tools and futuristic technology. They began to see the importance of banding together and the tribes began to emerge around 10 SHA. Socially they bury their dead and they enter into monogamous relationships.
