I was thoroughly unimpressed with this one. This one resembles an Invader in only the vaguest of senses. The wings are flat with no dihedral and have to be bent into position. Sure, I can chalk that up to just how it was packaged. But the overall proportions seem off and the detail is frustratingly bad. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The cockpit and the gunner&#039;s compartment is just a glob of lines that is supposed to be a window frame. Unless you absolutely need something inexpensive in an exact 1:300 scale, I wouldnt recommend this one.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

The ad showed a completed Invader and said &amp;quot;6 pieces&amp;quot;, so I assumed it was 6 complete planes. This was not the case. It&#039;s 1 plane that comes in 6 pieces that you have to assemble. I don&#039;t hold any fault to GHQ over that because it wasn&#039;t their ad, but I did want to mention it in case others are considering this model and not sure what to expect. &lt;br /&gt;

As for the model itself goes, this one is pewter and is highly detailed and highly accurate. The cockpit has the correct, irregular shape, and the guns are properly positioned. There is some fine panel lines molded into the model as well and the detail in the engine is excellent. The lines are crisp and clear and I was thoroughly impressed with the model&#039;s quality. The model also includes wing guns and the air intakes in the wings themselves. &lt;br /&gt;

I was missing 2 pieces from my kit when I received it. I&#039;m not sure if they fell out when I opened it, or if they were just missing from the factory, but GHQ graciously provided me with replacement pieces at no cost. It took a couple of weeks for the parts to arrive, but they get full marks for good customer service. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Overall, this is a high-quality model. The biggest thing to watch for when assembling the model is that there isn&#039;t a pre-defined slant or angle on the fuselage for the wings, so it would be very easy for someone to glue the wings on straight across, which would be wrong for an Invader. I&#039;d recommend dry-fitting the wings and using a small wooden block to set the dihedral of the wing as it dries. Other than that, full marks on this one.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

&lt;div&gt;This Invader is cast from white resin. The plane model itself is rather sturdy and the wings and tail have the proper amount of dihedral. The major components of the plane are properly proportioned and it is a good model from a distance. There are recessed panel lines included to allow for the painting of extra detail, which is definitely a benefit. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For this model, I have two main critiques. &lt;br /&gt;
1. The cockpit shape is wrong. This plane features a cockpit that has a uniform length on the pilot and co-pilot&#039;s side, but in the actual Invaders the pilot&#039;s windows were shorter (owing to the original design of the cockpit). I have been told that this will be corrected in future editions. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2. The front guns are improperly positioned. On this model they are all located right in the middle of the nose and stick out a the same length, like a B-25 does. However, on the Invader the guns terminate in a slanted angle. It might not be an issue for many people, but for me it was very noticeable since the guns were a prominent feature of the plane. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Overall, this is a good and affordable rendition of the Invader. While it&#039;s not perfect, it does hit a lot of the right boxes to make it a worthwhile addition for people who are looking to add 1:200 scale planes for dioramas or tabletop gaming.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

&lt;div&gt;With the belief that all major issues were addressed during testing, the US Army selected 2 of the 3 prototypes for service. The XA-26B would become the A-26B. The XA-26 would become the A-26C. The Army passed on the XA-26A feeling that the plane’s role and specifications were not enough of an improvement over the P-61 that was currently in production to justify the expense.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Initially Douglas opted to build both the B and C models concurrently at two plants, Douglas Long Beach (DL) and Douglas Tulsa (DT). The Long Beach plant was the first to get under way and produced a small number of both types of planes. However, it was eventually discovered that even though the planes were essentially identical except for the nose, the process would be streamlined by building them separately. Long Beach was assigned to produce the A-26B exclusively, and Tulsa would make the A-26C.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Douglas selected a number of contractors and vendors to supply parts for the Invader. Alcoa Aluminum supplied the raw materials.  Bendix Aviation’s Pacific Division supplied 8 different hydraulic components for the Invader under the Altair brand name.  Marquette Metal Products produced wiper blades that were fitted to the class C-model noses. The Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Company produced tail bumpers for the plane. Electronic Laboratories, Inc. was also brought in to help with the manufacturing process. As war-time demand increased, Beech Aircraft was brought in to produce complete wing assemblies, with the engine nacelles. Beech produced more than 1,000 pairs of wings that were married to the fuselages at Douglas plants.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Despite all of these companies coming together, production was still hampered and hopes of a quick rush to production were dashed. One problem was the lack of engineers that Douglas had available to put on this project. Douglas was already producing several other warplanes under contract, including the Boeing-designed B-17, and Douglas’ C-47 Skytrain, A-20 Havoc/Boston, and the SBD Dauntless dive bomber. This left a shortage of engineers to be assigned to the Invader. This also meant that there was a shorting of manufacturing equipment.&lt;br /&gt;

The problems were not completely Douglas’ however. Douglas designed the A-26B to have several options for nose armament. Perhaps the Army had too many choices, but they waffled back and forth over what kind of Armament the plane would have.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

&lt;div&gt;All of the wind-tunnel testing that was completed during the development phase led to a very finely tuned design. Most of the early test pilots, including Col. Stan Umstead, had nothing but positive things to say about the plane.&lt;br /&gt;

Test flights did not begin until 10 July 1942. Test pilot Ben Howard flew the plane in front of Douglas and Army officials. Upon concluding the flight, Howard’s assessment was that the plane was ready, but it would be plagued by a series of setbacks for the next 2 years.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As the XA-26 continued its testing phase, several considerable problems were uncovered. One of the first issues to crop up was due to the propeller spinners – the large cones over the propellers. These restricted air flow and caused the engines to overheat. The problem was solved in the production version by omitting the propeller spinners and modifying the engine cowling slightly.&lt;br /&gt;

Several nose gear collapses during the test phase also forced designers to make some modifications to the nose gear, although this problem would not be fully resolved for quite some time and would crop up again with the first batch of production units.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

&lt;div&gt;With a clear goal in mind to build the most advanced Attack plane of the era, Ed Heinemann and Robert Donovan set out and began designing a plane that would out-perform every other bomber of the Second World War.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The first notable difference between the Invader and other bombers of the day is that A-26 Invader was the first aircraft designed to make use of the new laminar flow airfoil wings. This was considered a radical decision at the time, but it proved correct. The wing shape, developed by NACA, allowed for a higher speed – which addressed one of the Army’s points – and it reduced structural stresses, which allowed for a higher G-force tolerance – which addressed a second point. This second point was also address by the decision to use a new aluminum-alloy developed by Alcoa Aluminum called 75S. This new alloy was lighter than other alloys of the time, without sacrificing strength, which allowed for lower weight and faster speed.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On the wings, they designed two powerful 18-cylinder Pratt &amp;amp; Whitney R-2800 double-wasp 2,000 horsepower radial engines. They also added a highly advanced (for the time) double-slotted electrically operated flaps. These new flaps, according to a 1943 memo from designer Ed Heinemann, would give the plane a 30% higher lift coefficient than the older Fowler flaps used on the Havoc. The new flaps also reduced the necessary take-off and landing speed by 10%, which meant a shorter runway could be used, which met another of the Army’s checklist items.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
They kept the basic tricycle landing gear configuration of the original Model 7A, as well as the large bomb bay, and wing-mounted bomb racks.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To streamline the craft they moved the defensive firepower into 2 remotely operated turrets that a single gunner could operate with a periscope. This was a direct response to one of the Army’s requirements.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Determined to get the design right, Douglas shared the design plans with NACA in early 1941 and wanted to get an evaluation of the plans, especially the correct shape for the plane’s fuselage, cross-section, and nacelles. Elton W. Miller, the head mechanical engineer at NACA evaluated the designs. He noted that “It is powered by two 2800 engines in nacelles which extend especially far forward with respect to the wing. The nacelles are below the wing, the upper surface tangent with the upper surface of the wing. The nacelles appear unusually long.”  During his final memo Miller said: “With reference to the length of the nacelle, it appeared that the length was determined by the position of the propellers with reference to the pilot’s cockpit and the personnel quarters in the fuselage and by the space needed for retracting the landing gear. It did not appear possible to make it any shorter for practical reasons and nobody suggested making it longer. It was the general opinion that the drag of the nacelle would depend largely on the skin friction and more especially on the number of scoops and protuberances on the surface.”&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
NACA’s final report was delivered by NACA engineer E. N. Jacobs to a combined group of Douglas, NACA, and military personnel. The final report was that the large nacelles of the Invader would account for a large portion of the A-26’s total drag. The suggested solution was to put the engines inside of the main body of the fuselage and use shafts and gears to drive the propellers. Douglas engineer Dr. M. U. Clauser opined that such a radical design philosophy was not likely to be pursued by anyone during the war.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
With regards to the question about the shape of the fuselage, Miller said this: “The main question seemed to be whether it would be better to use a square-section fuselage as contemplated in the preliminary design or whether a circular fuselage would be more efficient.” Miller noted some basic geometry considerations; a square shape has a higher internal volume than an equally sized tube. So, for the circular shape to carry the same volume of space as the square, it would have to be larger. But, a larger circular fuselage would also increase the drag of the plane and would make it slower. On the other hand, the joints required to marry the wings to the square fuselage would also increase drag. In the end, there was no practical advantage to choosing one shape over the other.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Douglas engineers told NACA that they would like to use NACA’s 19-foot wind-tunnel at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA. They wanted to build a 1:8 scale model of the plane to study the laminar flow wings, the new flaps, longitudinal stability of the plane, stalling, and other related questions. They also wanted to build a large nacelle (Perhaps full-sized) to verify engine cooling capabilities. Finally, they wanted to build large wing surfaces to test in the low-turbulence tunnel. These tests were completed under codename: “Project 98”.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The 1/8 scale model was tested in many different configurations, with flaps at different positions, and with the wheels up and down. Ultimately the engine nacelle was built to 1:3 scale and included an electric motor turning a scale propeller. The engine had to be water-cooled and this took a lot of the city’s water pressure, which elicited complaint from the local residents. The decision was made to conduct the engine tests at night so as to use the water when everyone was sleeping, which was successful in quieting the dissent.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The standard practice for NACA at the time was for NACA to build its own models for the wind-tunnel tests. But Ed Heinemann convinced NACA’s Dr. Carl Lewis to allow him to build the big 10-foot wing section because Heinemann wanted to use it for further testing at Langley.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
NACA and Douglas partnered together and designed new engine cowlings. While most people do not consider the covers as more than aesthetic piece or some basic form to protect the engine from debris, they were actually very advanced. Ed Heinemann said of the cowlings that the Invader’s engines “are cooled with the latest high entrance velocity cowling…. This cowling not only has less aerodynamic resistance but has resulted in lower engine temperatures than heretofore experienced.”&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
With the design laid out on paper and initial wooden scale wind-tunnel tests completed, work began building a full-scale wooden mockup. In April 1941, the Army Air Corps evaluated the mock-up and were pleased with the presentation. On 2 June 1941 the Department of Defense awarded Douglas with a contract to build two fully-operational prototypes. By the end of June, Douglas had a contract for a third prototype.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Due to great design work, Heinemann and his team had developed an initial plane design that was easy to modify. Thus, when the prototypes were being built at the Douglas El Segundo, California manufacturing plant, very little had to be done in order to accommodate the changes the Army wanted.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
XA-26 was built as a 3-man attack bomber with a transparent nose for a bomber/navigator.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
XA-26A was built as a 2-man night fighter.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
XA-26B was built as a 3-man attack plane with a hard nose with interchangeable armament configurations.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Army, seeing that war was inevitable and having confidence in Douglas’ design, issued a contact for 500 Invaders in Oct 1941, even before the prototypes were completed. In the meantime, the contract for A-20s was also increased to give the Army more equipment in the meantime.&lt;br /&gt;

The inclusion of the US into the war slowed development of the prototypes and the first prototypes were not ready until June 1942.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

&lt;div&gt;In the 1930s political tension in Europe caused many people to take notice of what was happening in an effort to try to guess at what would happen. Most people accurately predicted armed conflict as the inevitable conclusion, although few people would guess the scale of the war that was about to unfold. The shrewdest people began calculating and guessing what direction such a war might take, which weapons would be obsolete, and what might be needed.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Two noteworthy individuals in this later group were Jack Northrop and Ed Heinemann, who were quintessential designers for Douglas Aircraft Company. They began to speculate that in the coming war, the single-engine “Attack” type aircraft that the Army Air Corps currently used would be quickly obsolete. Collectively, they took a gamble and on their own began designing a new type of aircraft, the Model 7 – a twin-engine attack plane. In March 1937 the initial designs were ready under the Model 7A. In the fall, the Army finally caught up with the idea that a newer plane was needed and issued new requirements. Northrop and Heinemann began making revisions and produced the Model 7B, which became the A-20 Havoc.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Even as the A-20 was being rushed into production, many people were not content with the overall design and wanted something newer and more advanced. There was an idea that the Army wanted a more advanced plane than the A-20. Douglas engineer and artist R. G. Smith and Engineering Vice President Arthur Raymond began working unofficially on plans for the new plane while simultaneously Ed Heinemann paid a trip to Wright Field in the winter of 1940 to hear firsthand what the Army had in mind. With specific notes from the Army in hand, Ed looped in project engineer Robert Donovan and the team began designing a new aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
While most sources generally state that the A-26 Invader was derived from the A-20, Douglas didn’t view it that way. It may have replaced the Havoc in function and been a successor in that regard, but according to Douglas’ own product line documents, the A-26 was inspired more by the original Model 7A rather than the eventual A-20. Heinemann, Donovan, and the others at Douglas, wanted to exceed the capabilities of all of the light and medium bombers currently in production and set out to design what was the most advanced Attack plane of the era. This directive was further motivated by a letter to Douglas Aircraft from Maj. Frank O. Carroll, dated 5 Nov 1940. Carroll was the Chief of the Army Air Corps Experimental Engineering Section.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Maj. Carroll’s letter outlined 5 areas in which the current A-20 was lacking when “viewed in the light of the present war in Europe” and stated that these points must be corrected in any new bomber proposals to be considered.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
First, and most serious to the Army, was a lack of interchangeability of the crew.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Second was a lack of defensive firepower. The Army wanted guns in turrets, preferably .50 caliber guns, and with more ammo than currently carried.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Third was a design that was rated to handle 6 Gs. The army wanted a light to medium bomber capable of doing dive bombing maneuvers, but none of the existing planes were rated to be able to handle the kind of G-force stress when pulling out of the dive.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Fourth was a plane that could land and take-off on a shorter runway. This would allow the planes to operate from smaller bases, closer to the front-line, which was a feature that the Army considered essential for close-support Attack aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Fifth, and final, was that the speed, while sufficient for the day, would have to be increased on new proposals in order to stay ahead of the enemy.&lt;br /&gt;

There are a small number of planes that were completed, but not accepted into USAF inventory. This plane was the first working A-26 Prototype to be fully operational. In July of 1941 Douglas built a full-sized wooden mock-up of the plane with dummy weapons to pitch to the Air Force. That initial display culminated in a contract for two operational prototypes - this plane, and [[41-19505]] (The XA-26A). Later, the Air Force added a third prototype, the XA-26B ([[41-19588]]). &lt;br /&gt;

This plane was constructed with a glass nose (many sources cite it as &amp;quot;glazed&amp;quot;). &lt;br /&gt;

The Douglas XA-26 prototype first flew on 10 July 1942 at Mines Field, El Segundo, CA with test pilot Benny Howard at the controls. Flight tests revealed excellent performance and handling, but engine cooling problems led to cowling changes and elimination of the propeller spinners on production aircraft. Repeated collapses during testing led to reinforcement of the nose landing gear.&lt;br /&gt;

This plane served as the prototype for what would become the C model Invader - those equipped with glass noses to aid in bombing. One observable difference between the prototype models and the production models was the &amp;quot;propeller spinner&amp;quot; - the cone-shaped piece in the middle of the propeller blades. The prototype units were equipped with this feature, but none of the production models had them. &lt;br /&gt;

This plane was listed as severely damaged in a landing accident at Los Angeles Municipal Airport. The pilot was Max A. Constant. He survived the crash.&lt;br /&gt;

This plane was involved in a Taxi accident due to mnechamical failure at the Murroc Field Test Area. It was moderately damaged. The pilot was William H. Connell. He survived the crash.&lt;br /&gt;

This plane was purpose built for testing. Upon completing its mission it was retired from service. Some sources list this plane as subsequently written off 16 MAR 1943. This date coincides with an accident at Los Angeles Municipal Airport which lists the plane as severely damaged. However, this date is an error. It was involved in another accident in APR 1945, and it&#039;s official inventory control card shows that it remained in service until 9 JUN 1945.&lt;br /&gt;

Luckily, being a prototype model, there are many images of this plane. This Prototype was the only prototype version to feature a glass nose. The other two had solid noses. One thing that is noteworthy of the photos of this plane is that when it was built the ground crew accidentally applied the incorrect serial number on the tail. As a result, many of the photos show the plane with &amp;quot;219504&amp;quot;, but it should read &amp;quot;119504&amp;quot;. Photos without a tail number were taken between the test flight in Jul 1942 and the acceptance into inventory in 1944. &lt;br /&gt;

It was involved in another accident in APR 1945, and it&#039;s official inventory control card shows that it remained in service until 9 JUN 1945.&lt;br /&gt;

This plane was the first working A-26 Prototype to be fully operational. In July of 1941 Douglas built a full-sized wooden mock-up of the plane with dummy weapons to pitch to the Air Force. That initial display culminated in a contract for two operational prototypes - this plane, and [[41-19505]] (The XA-26A). Later, the Air Force added a third prototype, the XA-26B ([[41-19588]]). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This plane was constructed with a glass nose (many sources cite it as &amp;quot;glazed&amp;quot;). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Douglas XA-26 prototype first flew on 10 July 1942 at Mines Field, El Segundo, CA with test pilot Benny Howard at the controls. Flight tests revealed excellent performance and handling, but engine cooling problems led to cowling changes and elimination of the propeller spinners on production aircraft. Repeated collapses during testing led to reinforcement of the nose landing gear.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This plane served as the prototype for what would become the C model Invader - those equipped with glass noses to aid in bombing. One observable difference between the prototype models and the production models was the &amp;quot;propeller spinner&amp;quot; - the cone-shaped piece in the middle of the propeller blades. The prototype units were equipped with this feature, but none of the production models had them. &lt;br /&gt;

This plane was the first working A-26 Prototype to be fully operational. In July of 1941 Douglas built a full-sized wooden mock-up of the plane with dummy weapons to pitch to the Air Force. That initial display culminated in a contract for two operational prototypes - this plane, and [[41-19505]] (The XA-26A). Later, the Air Force added a third prototype, the XA-26B ([[41-19588]]). &lt;br /&gt;

This plane was the first working A-26 Prototype to be fully operational. In July of 1941 Douglas built a full-sized wooden mock-up of the plane with dummy weapons to pitch to the Air Force. That initial display culminated in a contract for two operational prototypes - this plane, and [[41-19505]] (The XA-26A). Later, the Air Force added a third prototype, the XA-26B ([[41-19588]]). &lt;br /&gt;

This plane was constructed with a glass nose (many sources cite it as &amp;quot;glazed&amp;quot;). &lt;br /&gt;

The Douglas XA-26 prototype first flew on 10 July 1942 at Mines Field, El Segundo, CA with test pilot Benny Howard at the controls. Flight tests revealed excellent performance and handling, but engine cooling problems led to cowling changes and elimination of the propeller spinners on production aircraft. Repeated collapses during testing led to reinforcement of the nose landing gear.&lt;br /&gt;

This plane was the first working A-26 Prototype to be fully operational. In July of 1941 Douglas built a full-sized wooden mock-up of the plane with dummy weapons to pitch to the Air Force. That initial display culminated in a contract for two operational prototypes - this plane, and [[41-19505]] (The XA-26A). Later, the Air Force added a third prototype, the XA-26B ([[41-19588]]). &lt;br /&gt;

This plane was constructed with a glass nose (many sources cite it as &amp;quot;glazed&amp;quot;). &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Douglas XA-26 prototype first flew on 10 July 1942 at Mines Field, El Segundo, CA with test pilot Benny Howard at the controls. Flight tests revealed excellent performance and handling, but engine cooling problems led to cowling changes and elimination of the propeller spinners on production aircraft. Repeated collapses during testing led to reinforcement of the nose landing gear.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Having served its purpose, the plane was later written off 16 Mar 1943 at Los Angeles Municipal Airport, CA. Despite being built, tested, and then written off, it wasn&#039;t officially accepted by the Air Force until Feb 1944. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This plane served as the prototype for what would become the C model Invader - those equipped with glass noses to aid in bombing. One observable difference between the prototype models and the production models was the &amp;quot;propeller spinner&amp;quot; - the cone-shaped piece in the middle of the propeller blades. The prototype units were equipped with this feature, but none of the production models had them. &lt;br /&gt;

This plane was purpose built for testing. Upon completing its mission it was retired from service. Some sources list this plane as subsequently written off 16 MAR 1943. This date coincides with an accident at Los Angeles Municipal Airport which lists the plane as severely damaged. However, this date is an error. It was involved in another accident in APR 1945, and it&#039;s official inventory control card shows that it remained in service until 9 JUN 1944.&lt;br /&gt;

Luckily, being a prototype model, there are many images of this plane. This Prototype was the only prototype version to feature a glass nose. The other two had solid noses. One thing that is noteworthy of the photos of this plane is that when it was built the ground crew accidentally applied the incorrect serial number on the tail. This plane was listed as severely damaged in a landing accident at Los Angeles Municipal Airport. The pilot was Max A. Constant. He survived the crash.&lt;br /&gt;

This plane was purpose built for testing. Upon completing its mission it was retired from service. Some sources list this plane as subsequently written off 16 MAR 1943. This date coincides with an accident at Los Angeles Municipal Airport which lists the plane as severely damaged. However, this date is an error. It was involved in another accident in APR 1945, and it&#039;s official inventory control card shows that it remained in service until 9 JUN 1944.&lt;br /&gt;

Luckily, being a prototype model, there are many images of this plane. This Prototype was the only prototype version to feature a glass nose. The other two had solid noses. One thing that is noteworthy of the photos of this plane is that when it was built the ground crew accidentally applied the incorrect serial number on the tail. As a result, many of the photos show the plane with &amp;quot;219504&amp;quot;, but it should read &amp;quot;119504&amp;quot;. &lt;br /&gt;
