The Le Franceys Family is the earliest known progenitors of the Westmoreland Line. Given the Norman spelling of the line, I have long hypothesized that these Le Franceys are descended from Gilbert Le Francais mentioned in the Battle Abbey Roll, or some such similar person. A testable solution exists to this end - Gilbert Le Franceys had at least one son, Richard, who inherited land and title in Haddon and took the name of the estate - Vernon. The descendants of Sir Richard Vernon (son of Gilbert Le Franceys) has been unbroken for 6 centuries. Hypothetically, the Westmoreland DNA can be compared against Vernon DNA to see if there is a match. If there is, then it would prove that hypothesis correct, if not, the hypothesis must be rejected.
The Le Franceys Family is one of the putported origins of the Westmoreland Line. Given the Norman spelling of the line, I have long hypothesized that these Le Franceys are descended from companions of William of the Conqueror who invaded England in 1066. Note that with these early trees there is not a lot of documentation to work with. In many cases there is but a single document that creates these connections so these trees should be taken with a grain of salt as they are more prone to errors than more contemporary trees. As such, I present this tree more as a "legend" than of actual fact. It may be correct, but I cannot guarantee that.

Also note that the connection from this family to the Cleburnes of Cliburn Hall is not well established, but that will be explored on a different page.

The Le Franceys Family is one of the putported origins of the Westmoreland Line. Given the Norman spelling of the line, I have long hypothesized that these Le Franceys are descended from companions of William of the Conqueror who invaded England in 1066. However, without actual evidence to support this it is merely conjecture at this point.
