The Cleburnes of Cliburn Hall ruled the town of Cliburn for 9 Generations as Cleburnes. The first person to adopt the Cleburne surname was the 4th known generation of Le Franceys.

One purported origin is that the family is descended from Adam Le Franceys, and the other purported origin is that the family is descended from Bardolf, Lord of Ravensworth. Both of these claims will br thoroughly evaluated and presented herein.
