WWII

R. G. Smith

R. G. Smith was a notable engineer who worked for Douglas beginning in 1936 and worked on all of the Naval aircraft that were produced by Douglas and /McDonnell-Douglas for the next 20 years. He also began drawing and painting Douglas aircraft and has produced over 2,000 drawings and illustrations. You can see more of his work here (we are not affiliated with this company in any way): [1]

"386th Bomb Group" -R. G. Smith
This image depicts two bombers of the 553rd Bombardment Squadron of the 386th Bombardment Group.

"Train Yard Raid" -R. G. Smith
This drawing depicts a train yard raid carried out by bombers of the 386th Bombardment Group. There is a glaring error in Mr. Smith's illustration, however. None of the bombers of the 386th Bomb Group carried those letters on the nose. The letters used by the 386th were on the side of the fuselage. The letters depicted in this image, FX1, etc. were on planes that were assigned to the Florence AAB Training Base.

Geoff Harper

"Douglas A-26 Factory Promo" - Geoff Harper
This piece was painted by Geoff Harper for Douglas to use in promotions advertising the new A-26 Invader. I don't have much information beyond this regarding the artist. I also don't have a very high resolution photo of this piece, hence the bad quality. If you know of this artist or have more information, please let me know.

"Ruhr Valley Invaders" - N. Trudigan

Douglas Castleman

Douglas Castleman is a modern professional artist who does illustrations and paintings of airplanes and nature scenes. You can find his work here: [2].

A-26 Drawing - Douglas Castleman
A very nice illustration of an A-26 wearing incorrect Squadron Code markings. The squadron code F8 was the 733rd Bombardment Squadron, 453rd Bombardment Group - They flew B-24s, not A-26s.

"13th Bomb Squadron Anniversary" (1986) - R. G. smith
This drawing was made specifically for the 1986 reunion of the 13th Bomb Squadron Association. Only 300 of these drawings were printed. The IHF has #273 in our collection. This image comes directly from our copy. This drawing is essentially a modification of the 386th Bomb Group image above.
